What is live chat software?

Live chat software is the embedded widget on a website that lets visitors message the support team in real time, with conversations routed to agents and answered by humans or an AI bot.

Live chat software is the messaging widget that sits on a website and lets visitors talk to the support team in real time. Visitors click the widget, type a question, and either an agent or an AI bot responds. The conversation can continue even after the visitor closes the browser tab.

How live chat actually works

The website operator drops a single line of JavaScript into the page template. That snippet loads the widget asynchronously so it does not slow the page. When a visitor clicks the widget, a chat panel opens.

The visitor's message is sent to the support platform's backend. The platform either auto-replies (if an AI bot is configured) or routes the message to an available human agent. The agent answers from the same inbox they handle email and other channels in. The visitor sees the reply, can respond, and the conversation continues.

What separates a chat widget from a Slack-style messenger

Both are real time messaging, but live chat is built for support specifically. The differences:

  • Asymmetric setup: the visitor does not need an account. They identify themselves as needed, sometimes through an intake form.
  • Persistent identity: the platform recognizes returning visitors so the conversation history persists.
  • Routing: the platform routes new conversations to whichever agent is available, with rules for skill, language, or workload.
  • Offline mode: when no agent is around, the widget collects the message and turns it into a ticket the team picks up later.
  • AI bot integration: a bot can handle simple questions before the agent is needed.

Features that matter in 2026

The basic widget is a commodity. The features that separate good from bad:

One line install. If the widget needs more than copy and paste of one snippet, the team will not install it.

Customization without code. Brand colors, position, greeting messages, and triggers should be settable from a dashboard.

Cookieless mode. EU GDPR requires the option to run the chat without analytics cookies. Vendors that do not support this gate themselves out of the EU market.

Prompt injection protection. If you have an AI bot, malicious customers can try to manipulate it. The vendor needs guardrails by default.

Pre-chat intake form. Some teams need name, email, and order number before the agent picks up. A required field option is non-negotiable.

How to choose one

The first filter is whether your customers are mostly on web. If half your support comes from WhatsApp, a chat-only product is a partial fit. Look for live chat that ships inside an omnichannel platform so all channels share the same agent UI and reporting.

The second filter is the AI economics. AI in chat is now table stakes. The pricing varies by 100x across vendors at scale. Run the math on your real chat volume.

The third filter is install time. Most teams over-estimate their willingness to spend a week configuring a chat widget. Pick one that is live the same afternoon.
